Gary started G2 Planning & Design in 2012 after many successful years practicing as a Landscape Architect / Planner and manager of the planning studio at Bird Houk Collaborative. Gary has practiced more than twenty-three years as a landscape architect, and has built a diverse portfolio of projects over his career. Initially he worked with mostly private clients to successfully plan, design, and re-zone new development projects such as residential/multi-family communities, office buildings, and mixed-use / retail developments. Over the years, Gary has developed a depth of knowledge in planning and design that allows him to contribute on tasks that range from writing construction specifications and detailing complex hardscape elements to advising communities about controlling growth.
His advice to both public and private clients is grounded in his deep knowledge of how to integrate all of the various elements that make projects successful. Gary is an excellent public speaker, and knows how to present contentious topics to audiences with divergent viewpoints in a way that challenges and informs without offending. In addition, Gary has leveraged his knowledge of private development to help communities anticipate and plan for future growth by assisting them in updating their comprehensive plans and zoning codes. He is applying those skills to a variety of our clients, including;
- A Township that is concerned about growth and maintaining rural character
- A developer who wants to ensure a large land sale fits the Master Plan that G2 created
- A homebuilder who wants a feasibility study before writing a contract with the landowner
Gary has the experience to understand that the details of projects are important, and the ability to apply this knowledge to our client’s long range plans and goals. (Resume)
Dave is a very creative thinker, and is capable of originating designs that transcend the Client’s vision in significantly positive ways. For example, we recently had a Client pick a solution we almost didn’t present because Dave was not sure it fit the original vision. Dave is particularly skilled at exploring textures, materials, colors and at devising ways to join these elements together in fresh combinations that are original and archetypal. As an inquisitive designer, he searches for the optimal solution that balances the Client’s goals with handsome, winning landscapes. (Resume)
Gary joined Gary Smith and Dave Guappone in 2016 after working with CT Consultants/Floyd Brown for 4 years. Prior to this, he worked with Dave and Gary at Bird Houk Collaborative (now OHM Partners) for 2 years after leaving POD Design in 2007. Gary started POD Design in 2005 when he merged Schmidt Land Design with Kolwicz-Li Design. He established Schmidt Land Design in 1993 after returning to Central Ohio from southern California, where he was involved in planning new towns and large mixed use developments for clients such as the Irvine Company in Newport Beach.
In addition to his land development and landscape architecture experience, Gary has been trained in real estate and finance at MIT’s Center for Real Estate Development and Harvard Business School, with a Master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Combined with his natural talents in site analysis and land planning, this training allows him to quickly assess a Client’s program and apply it to creative design solutions. Gary also is an avid gardener, and his knowledge of plant materials and varieties is extensive. His passion is creating beautiful outdoor spaces for people, and has succeeded in this endeavor at many scales as his portfolio will attest. (Resume)
